Google Business Profile for Dehradun Businesses: A Simple Setup Guide That Gets You Found
How Dehradun and Uttarakhand businesses can set up, verify and keep a Google Business Profile working: categories, photos, reviews and weekly habits, in plain steps.

When someone in Dehradun types "bakery near me", "physiotherapist Rajpur Road" or "homestay in Mussoorie", the first thing they usually see is not a website. It's a small map with three businesses on it. Those three get most of the calls, the direction requests and the WhatsApp messages.
That box is driven by Google Business Profile, the free listing that shows your name, photos, hours, reviews and phone number on Google Search and Maps. If you run a café, clinic, salon, coaching centre, shop or homestay, it is probably the most valuable free marketing tool you have. Here is how to set it up properly and keep it working, in plain steps.
Why it matters more than you think
Most local customers decide quickly. They look at the map, check the star rating, glance at a few photos, see if you're open, and tap "Call" or "Directions". Many never visit your website at all.
A complete, active profile helps in three ways:
- You show up for searches near you, including ones that don't use your business name.
- You look trustworthy, with real photos, recent reviews and correct hours.
- You're easy to contact, with one tap to call, get directions, message or book.
And it costs nothing. Google does not charge for a Business Profile. If someone calls offering "Google verification for a fee" or "guaranteed top ranking", be careful.
Step 1: Claim or create your profile
Go to google.com/business and sign in with a Google account you'll keep long term. Use a business email if you have one, not a staff member's personal account. Many owners lose access to their own listing because "the boy who set it up" left.
Search for your business name first. Google often already has a listing built from public information. If it exists, claim it instead of making a new one. Duplicate listings confuse customers and can get both suspended.
Choose the right setup:
- Storefront business (shop, café, clinic): show your address.
- Service-area business (electrician, home tutor, caterer, tour operator working from home): hide your address and list the areas you serve, like Dehradun, Rishikesh and Haridwar.
Step 2: Get verified
Your profile only appears fully, with photos and edits, once it's verified. Google decides which methods you're offered, and these days the most common one is a short video recorded through the Business Profile app.
According to Google's own help pages, the video must be:
- recorded live on your phone through your Business Profile, not uploaded from your gallery
- one continuous, unedited clip of at least 30 seconds
- showing where you are (street signs, nearby shops or landmarks), proof the business is real (your signboard, shop interior or work tools) and proof you run it (opening the shutter, the billing counter, a staff-only area)
Don't show bank details, PAN or ID numbers, or other people's faces. Google says review can take up to five business days. Plan the clip before you hit record: walk from the main road sign to your board, then inside to the counter. A signboard whose name matches your profile name makes a big difference.
Step 3: Fill in every field (properly)
Google says local results are based on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance and prominence (how well known you are, including reviews). You can't change distance, but you control a lot of the rest.
- Business name: your real name, exactly as on your board. Don't stuff it with keywords like "Best Cake Shop Dehradun Cheap". It breaks Google's rules and can get the listing suspended.
- Category: the most important field. Pick the most specific primary category ("Physiotherapy clinic", not "Health"). Add a few secondary ones that are genuinely true.
- Hours: keep them correct, and add special hours for Diwali, Holi and other holidays. Nothing loses a customer faster than arriving at a closed shutter.
- Phone and WhatsApp: use a number someone actually answers. If you see a Chat option under Contact in your profile, add your WhatsApp link so people can message you in one tap.
- Website or booking link: link to your site, your booking page or your online store. If you don't have a website yet, at least add a clear menu, price list or product list.
- Description: 2 to 4 plain sentences about what you do, who it's for and where. Write it for a customer, not for Google.
- Services or products: list your main ones with short descriptions and, where you can, starting prices.
Step 4: Add real photos, and keep adding them
Photos are often what makes someone choose you over the next listing. Add:
- the outside, so people recognise your shop from the road
- the inside, clean and well lit
- your actual products, dishes, rooms or work
- your team, if they're comfortable with it
Use real photos taken on a decent phone in daylight, not stock images. Add a few new ones every month. A homestay can share the view each season; a bakery can post its festive range.
Step 5: Get reviews the right way
Reviews are the biggest trust signal on your profile, and they help with ranking too. The trick is simply to ask, consistently.
- From your profile, copy your "Ask for reviews" link and keep it handy.
- Send it on WhatsApp after a good visit, with a short, polite note.
- Put a QR code at the billing counter or on the table tent.
What not to do: Google's policies don't allow paying for reviews, offering discounts in exchange for them, writing reviews for yourself, or asking only happy customers while filtering out unhappy ones. Fake reviews can be removed, and repeat problems can lead to restrictions on your profile.
Reply to every review, good and bad, within a day or two. Thank people by name. For a negative review, stay calm, apologise for the experience, and offer to sort it out on a call. Future customers read your replies as much as the review.
Step 6: Keep it alive with small weekly habits
A profile that's set up and forgotten slowly falls behind. Ten minutes a week is enough:
- post an update or offer (new menu, a seasonal discount, a workshop date)
- reply quickly to calls and WhatsApp messages that come in from your profile
- check that hours and phone number are still right
- look at the Performance section to see how many people called, asked for directions or visited your site
Common mistakes we see
- The listing is owned by an old staff member's email, and nobody can edit it.
- Different phone numbers on the profile, the website and Instagram.
- Wrong pin location on the map, especially in lanes and new colonies.
- No reviews replied to in months.
- "Temporarily closed" left on after a renovation.
Where your website fits in
Your Business Profile gets you found. Your website, booking page or online store is where people decide and pay. The two work best together: the profile sends visitors, and a fast, mobile-friendly site with clear prices, a WhatsApp button and online booking turns them into customers.

Frequently asked questions
Is Google Business Profile free?
Yes. Creating, verifying and managing a profile is free. Google's paid ads are separate and optional.
How long does it take to appear on Google Maps?
After verification, Google says reviews of edits and new photos can take a few days. Ranking well in the map results takes longer and depends on reviews, completeness and activity.
Can I list my business if I work from home?
Yes. Set it up as a service-area business, hide your home address and list the areas you serve.
Should I pay someone for reviews or a "top ranking package"?
No. Paid or fake reviews break Google's rules and can get your profile restricted. Nobody can guarantee a top position.
